Callitriche stagnalis aka Starwort

Taxonomy

Callitriche stagnalis, also known as pond water-starwort, is a perennial aquatic vascular plant species. It can be found in a variety of aquatic and subaquatic habitats, particularly in areas with slow to non-moving water. This plant has spoon-shaped, bright green submerged leaves that can grow up to 2cm long, as well as rosettes of broader floating leaves. The stems of C. stagnalis often root into wet mud, forming a dense mat. While it does not pose a threat to humans, its rapid reproduction can be a concern for native vegetation in areas where it has been introduced, as the dense vegetative mats tend to out-compete native species.

How to care for Starwort

Difficulty

Even if you don't have a green thumb, you can successfully care for Starwort due to its easy-going nature.

Water

Starwort should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Starwort prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Toxicity

The toxicity level of this plant has not been officially confirmed by Ploi. If there is a possibility of ingestion of plant material with an uncertain toxicity by you, a family member, or a pet, it is advisable to seek the assistance of a medical professional.
