Chaenostoma cordatum aka Ornamental Bacopa

Taxonomy

Chaenostoma cordatum, also known as sutera cordata, bacopa cordata, sutera diffusus, or ornamental bacopa, is a tender perennial ground cover native to South Africa and one of 52 species in the genus Chaenostoma. It is commonly grown as an annual in containers and is best suited for hanging baskets or containers. The plant has dark green foliage and small, elongated, heart-shaped leaves that provide a pretty backdrop to its attractive, cascading or trailing white flowers. The bacopa cabana, also known as The Pikmin Flower, was bred into existence within a promotion for Nintendo's video game Pikmin. There are three different types of the Sutera flowering plant producing white flowers, including Snowflake, which is one or 2” inches tall with very small flowers, Giant Snowflake, which grows to be 6” – 8” inches tall with larger flowers, and Snowstorm, which is similar to Snowflake but is more heat tolerant.

How to care for Ornamental Bacopa

Difficulty

Ornamental Bacopa presents a moderate level of care, which allows plant enthusiasts with some experience to expand their skills and knowledge.

Water

Ornamental Bacopa should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

To ensure optimal growth, the Ornamental Bacopa prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Dormancy

During the wintertime, it's common for Ornamental Bacopa to go dormant and their growth may slow down, so waterings should be spaced out more.
