Cryptanthus aka Bonita Earth Star

Taxonomy

Cryptanthus is a genus of flowering plants in the family Bromeliaceae, subfamily Bromelioideae. The genus name is from the Greek cryptos (hidden) and anthos (flower). The genus formerly had two recognized subgenera: the type subgenus and subgenus Hoplocryptanthus Mez which has been raised to the separate genus Hoplocryptanthus. All species of this genus are endemic to Brazil. The common name for any Cryptanthus is "Earth star". This stemless bromeliad forms a low, spreading rosette about 20cm across. The rosettes are composed of strap-shaped, toothed, wavy-margined leaves with pink stripes. Native to Brazil, this plant is also known as Earth Stars. It is an alien plant with tough leaves and comes in different colors and sizes, so everyone can find Cryptanthus to their taste. The genus Cryptanthus is identified within 25 species and varieties, which come in different colors ranging from dark green to bright pink and red. Plant lovers usually grow this easy-care plant for its unique leaves, but Cryptanthus also produces small beautiful white or pink flowers.

How to care for Bonita Earth Star

Difficulty

Even if you don't have a green thumb, you can successfully care for Bonita Earth Star due to its easy-going nature.

Water

Bonita Earth Star does best in dry soil and should only be watered sparingly.

Soil

Bonita Earth Star loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

Bonita Earth Star thrives in bright and direct sunlight. To ensure your plant receives enough light to survive, place it less than one foot from a window. The current weather in your area may affect the placement in your home. For example, if you live in a region that has longer and more intense periods of sunlight, then you may want to place the plant farther away from the window to avoid direct sunlight and reduce the risk of sunburn. Alternatively, if you live in a region with relatively milder temperatures and less intense sunlight, then you may be able to place the plant closer to the window for increased exposure. Ultimately, the current weather in your area should be taken into consideration when determining the best placement for your Elaine Earth Star.

Toxicity

Ploi lacks confirmed information on the toxicity of this plant. If you, a relative, or your pet accidentally consume plant material with unknown toxicity, it's best to consult a medical expert.
