Cymbidium ensifolium aka Fukien Orchid

Taxonomy

Cymbidium ensifolium, also known as the four-season orchid, golden-thread orchid, spring orchid, burned-apex orchid, and rock orchid, is a medium-sized, evergreen orchid species native to Japan, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Hong Kong, Sumatra, and Java. This lytophite plant prefers to root on rocks and can be found in misty evergreen forests on mossy limestone at elevations up to 1500 meters. It has egg-shaped pseudobulbs and 2-4 leaf-bearing stems, with linear leaves that can reach up to 60cm in length and 2cm in width. In late summer and early autumn, upright or arching inflorescences emerge, carrying up to thirteen flowers that are usually pale yellowish-green with dark red spotting. Each flower measures approximately 6cm and is fragrant. The bloom period for Cymbidium ensifolium is shorter than that of regular cymbidiums, lasting about 2-3 weeks. It is a species of interest to orchid collectors due to its various cultivars.

How to care for Fukien Orchid

Difficulty

Caring for Fukien Orchid can be demanding, requiring a deep understanding of its unique needs and a commitment to provide optimal care.

Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Dormancy

During the wintertime, it's common for Fukien Orchid to go dormant and their growth may slow down, so waterings should be spaced out more.
