Dryopteris cristata aka Crested Buckler Fern

Taxonomy

Dryopteris cristata, also known as crested wood fern or crested buckler-fern, is a species of fern found in wetlands across the Northern Hemisphere. It is a tetraploid species resulting from a hybridization between Dryopteris ludoviciana and an extinct species called Dryopteris semicristata, which is also believed to be one of the parents of Dryopteris carthusiana. This fern, in turn, serves as a parent to another hybrid fern called Dryopteris clintoniana. The crested wood fern thrives in wetland environments and requires constant moisture throughout the year. Its fronds can grow tall, reaching heights of up to a meter or more, but are typically narrow. The plant forms clumps and consists of semi-evergreen erect fertile fronds with widely spaced leaflets, as well as shorter, arching evergreen sterile fronds. Interestingly, the crested wood fern is also a rare houseplant that can be easily grown with regular watering. It prefers long-lasting, direct light and should be positioned within one foot of a window. Well-draining soil is essential for its growth, and it typically does not require additional fertilizers if repotted each time it doubles in size. Native to Europe, Central Siberia, Canada, and the United States, the crested wood fern belongs to the Dryopteris genus.

How to care for Crested Buckler Fern

Difficulty

Caring for Crested Buckler Fern is a breeze, as it is highly adaptable and forgiving to minor neglect.

Water

Crested Buckler Fern should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Crested Buckler Fern loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Crested Buckler Fern prefers bright indirect light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Toxicity

Ploi lacks confirmed information on the toxicity of this plant. If you, a relative, or your pet accidentally consume plant material with unknown toxicity, it's best to consult a medical expert.

Fertilizer

The Crested Buckler Fern grows at a slow pace and doesn't require any supplementary fertilizers. By renewing its potting soil once a year, it should receive enough nourishment. Remember, plants obtain their energy from sunlight, not fertilizers.

Region of origin

Crested Buckler Fern’s native range is Eastern N. America - Newfoundland to Saskatchewan and south to N. Carolina and Montana.
