Eremurus regelii
Taxonomy ID: 21434
Eremurus regelii is a perennial in the Asphodelaceae family. It comes from temperate parts of Central Asia. Its range includes Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. It grows on earthy slopes and in rocky sites. Records place it in the western Tien Shan and western Pamir Alai. These sites lie around 3,280 feet [1,000 metres] above sea level. It is not native to Britain or Ireland.
Plants reach about 6 feet [1.8 metres] in height. They grow back each year and suit cultivated beds. Flowers appear from April to May. Each flower has both male and female organs. The supplied species account gives no flower colour or leaf details. It also gives no mature spread or fruit description. These gaps limit how closely its garden form can be described.
Choose a warm, sunny site with shelter from harsh weather. This species does not grow in shade. It prefers rich, light sandy loam with very good drainage. Sandy and loamy soils both suit it. It accepts mildly acid, neutral and mildly alkaline conditions. Soil can be dry or moist, and plants withstand drought. Keep them dry in summer once flowering has finished. PFAF lists a USDA hardiness range of zones 4–8.
Winter wet and late frosts need care in the garden. A layer of sharp sand can help during wet winters. An autumn organic mulch can give extra winter cover. Remove that mulch in spring to reduce new growth rot. Protect young shoots where late spring frosts occur. Roots dislike disturbance, so choose the final planting site early. Set plants shallowly, leaving the crown a little exposed. Divide only when needed, after growth dies down in late summer.
Seed offers another way to raise new plants. Sow fresh seed in autumn in a cold frame. Stored seed can go into a greenhouse when obtained. Germination may take one to twelve months at 15°C. Grow seedlings under glass for their first winter. Plant them out after the last expected spring frost. PFAF reports no known food or medicinal uses. It also lists no known hazards, rather than proving safety. Dextrose from the roots provides a material for industrial glue. PFAF does not flag the species as weedy.
