Eucalyptus microcorys aka Australian Tallowwood

Eucalyptus microcorys is an evergreen tree known as tallow wood. It belongs to the myrtle family, Myrtaceae. Its native range spans southeast Queensland and northeast New South Wales. It grows in the subtropical part of eastern Australia. Wild trees live in forests on hills and mountains. Some rise above the main canopy in rainforests. Parts of its range have winter snow and frost.

This fast-growing tree needs space to reach its full size. Garden references give a height of about 148 feet [45 metres]. A broader account gives 98–197 feet [30–60 metres]. Its trunk grows straight and can reach 6.9 feet [2.1 metres] across. The clear trunk may make up nearly two-thirds of its height. The tree keeps its leaves through the year. Its flowers have both male and female parts. Bees and other insects pollinate them.

Grow it in full sun, rather than a shaded site. It prefers soil that drains well but holds some moisture. Moderate soil fertility suits it, though it also tolerates poor ground. It can grow in sand, loam, or clay. Slightly acid to neutral soil gives its preferred pH range. It also tolerates mildly alkaline ground. Once established, it can cope with drought and dry soil. Its home climate has hot, moist summers and sometimes dry winters. The dry season can last about three months.

Cold limits where gardeners can grow this tree. Dormant plants may survive temperatures near 23°F [-5°C]. New growth can suffer severe harm at 32°F [0°C]. PFAF lists USDA zones 9–11 for the species. It may grow outdoors in Britain's mildest places. Most British sites are unlikely to suit it. Young trees need protection during their first winter. PFAF suggests sowing seed in a greenhouse in late winter or early spring. It advises moving seedlings into separate pots while still young.

People harvest this tree for timber, tannins, and essential oil. Its hard, strong wood lasts well and takes a smooth polish. Growers have planted it for timber in several African countries.
