Helwingia chinensis
Taxonomy ID: 20036
Helwingia chinensis, or Chinese helwingia, is an evergreen shrub in the Helwingiaceae family. Its native range runs from central and east-central China to Thailand. Kew places it in the subtropical zone. In China, it grows in woods and thickets on slopes. Records place it at 3,280–8,530 feet [1,000–2,600 metres] above sea level. These habitats include mixed woods and broad-leaved forests. It is not native to Britain or Ireland.
In gardens, it reaches about 5–8 feet [1.5–2.5 metres] tall. Its spread is about 3–5 feet [1–1.5 metres]. The RHS also describes plants around 6.6 feet [2 metres] tall. It takes five to ten years to reach full size. Branches grow upright or spread outward, giving the shrub a bushy form. Young branches show a mix of purple and green. The leaves feel leathery and end in long, narrow points. They stay on the plant through winter.
Small white flowers appear in early summer. Their position gives this shrub an unusual look. They emerge from the middle of the leaf blades. Black, oblong fruits follow the flowers. Each fruit can reach about 0.28 inches [7 millimetres] long. The evergreen leaves, flowers, and dark fruit provide several features to view. The RHS suggests using it in beds and borders. It also lists hedges and screens as suitable uses.
Choose a sheltered site with partial or dappled shade. A woodland edge suits it, but deep shade does not. It grows in clay, loam, or sand with good drainage. The soil should contain plenty of humus and be acid to neutral. The RHS gives it an H4 hardiness rating. Plants For A Future lists USDA zones 7–10. The RHS reports few pest or disease problems. Sow seed in a cold frame in autumn. Other options include dividing root suckers in late winter. Semi-ripe cuttings can be taken in late summer.
Plants For A Future gives its food value a low rating. It says the flowers and leaves may be edible. This is tentative evidence, not firm proof of food safety. The same source records traditional use of leaf and bark decoctions for inflamed skin. It lists no known hazards, but that does not establish safety. It reports no other uses and does not flag the plant as weedy.
