Hoya aka Hoya Rangsan

Taxonomy

Hoya is a group of plants that includes over 500 species and numerous cultivars, all of which are native to Southeast Asia. Commonly known as waxplants, they have thick, waxy leaves that help them retain water in hot climates. Hoya kerrii 'Variegata' is a slow-growing, semi-succulent variant with heart-shaped leaves that are bright green with creamy-yellow or white margins. The leaves are up to 4 inches long, 3 inches wide, and 0.2 inches thick, and they emerge on vining stems that can grow up to 13 feet long. Hoya plants are excellent climbers and will thrive if given a trellis to grow on. Their stunning, other-worldly flowers are often fragrant and come in vibrant shades of red, pink, yellow, and more. These flowers are small, star-shaped, and creamy-white with pink to rose-purple centers, and they are typically produced in clusters along the stems.

How to care for Hoya Rangsan

Difficulty

If you're looking for a plant that offers a moderate level of challenge, Hoya Rangsan is a great choice to test your gardening skills.

Water

Hoya Rangsan does best in dry soil and should only be watered sparingly.

Soil

Hoya Rangsan loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Hoya Rangsan prefers bright indirect light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Dormancy

The Hoya Rangsan lacks a typical dormancy pattern. If there is a marked reduction in growth, ensure that the plant is receiving enough sunlight and water to thrive.

Toxicity

Ploi lacks confirmed information on the toxicity of this plant. If you, a relative, or your pet accidentally consume plant material with unknown toxicity, it's best to consult a medical expert.

Humidity

The Hoya Rangsan does not need extra humidity. Plants primarily absorb water through their root system, making soil watering the best way to provide humidity to your plants.

Fertilizer

The Hoya Rangsan should be repotted when it has doubled in size or annually, whichever comes first. Providing fresh potting soil with all the essential nutrients each year ensures the plant's well-being, eliminating the need for fertilizer. Remember, plants derive their energy from the sun and not fertilizer.

Region of origin

Hoya Rangsan’s native range is Southeast Asia and Australia.
