Hoya kenejiana aka Hoya Kenejiana Albo Marginata

Hoya kenejiana is a woody climbing plant from New Guinea. It belongs to the Apocynaceae family and grows in wet tropical forests. In the wild, it lives on twigs in the forest canopy. This makes it an epiphyte, rather than a ground-rooted vine. Its known habitat includes lowland forest over volcanic ground. The species takes its name from Kenejia, where Schlechter collected it in 1908.

Wild stems can reach about 39 feet [12 metres] long. The evidence gives no size range for plants grown in pots. Its leaves grow loosely along the climbing stems. They are large, glossy, fleshy, and narrow to oblong. Both leaf surfaces lack hairs, and the tips are blunt. Short leaf stalks have a shallow groove on top. The foliage forms a dark backdrop for the pale flowers.

The plant bears upright, rounded umbels of 15–25 flowers. Each flower measures about 0.05–0.07 feet [0.015–0.02 metres] across. The corolla ranges from brownish white to pale or golden yellow. Some flowers show a hint of pink. The central corona is cream or yellow. Fine, dense hairs line the corolla edges. The flowers have no scent. Bloom starts even on young plants, mainly in spring and summer. In suitable climates, flowering can continue throughout the year. Flower displays last at least 16 days.

In cultivation, this species suits beginners and grows strongly in good conditions. Extra warmth and humidity help it grow. Give it bright, indirect light rather than prolonged direct sun. Strong light can bronze the leaves and help flowering. Too much direct sun can scorch them. Use a porous potting mix that holds some moisture but drains well. Air must reach the roots. Suitable materials include orchid mix, coconut husk, perlite, and pumice.

Water during summer, then let the mix dry before watering again. Its fleshy tissues store water between drinks. Keep it much drier in winter, with good airflow. Do not maintain high humidity during its rest period. Long spells in damp compost can cause root loss. Too much water and shade can also distort growth. Feed with a fertilizer made for epiphytes. Stem cuttings root readily in water, soil, or perlite.
