Juniperus drupacea aka Andys

Juniperus drupacea is an evergreen tree in the cypress family, Cupressaceae. Its common names include Syrian juniper, habbel, and plum juniper. Kew places its native range in southern Greece and southern Türkiye to Syria. It is not native to Britain or Ireland. In Turkey, it grows on rocky slopes within forest or scrub. These sites lie at heights of 3,280–4,920 feet [1,000–1,500 metres].

The tree reaches about 49 feet [15 metres] tall. Its stated spread is about 6.6 feet [2 metres]. This gives it a narrow outline at maturity. It keeps its leaves throughout the year. PFAF rates its growth as moderate, though fairly fast for a juniper. One tree at Westonbirt reached 23 feet [7 metres] after 23 years. Gardeners can use it as an ornamental tree or woodland canopy plant.

Male and female reproductive structures grow on separate trees. Wind carries the pollen, and seed production needs both sexes. The fleshy cones take two years to mature. They measure about 0.07–0.08 feet [0.020–0.025 metres] across. PFAF gives October as the seed-ripening month. The sweet, edible cones can be eaten raw or cooked. British-grown trees rarely produce cones, according to PFAF. That source also notes that only male trees had been seen in British cultivation.

Grow this tree in full sun, as it cannot grow in shade. It accepts sandy, loamy, and clay soils with good drainage. It prefers neutral or slightly alkaline ground, including limestone and chalk. It can also grow in very acid soil. Dry banks suit it, and established trees tolerate drought. PFAF lists USDA hardiness zones 6–9. The species resists honey fungus, though this does not imply resistance to every disease.

Seed raising can take patience because the seed coat is hard. Sow ripe seed in a cold frame. Some seeds may sprout the next spring; most take another year. Germination may need cold, warm, then cold periods, each lasting two to three months. PFAF lists no known hazards, but this is not proof of safety for people or pets. It records no medicinal uses and no other practical uses beyond the edible cones.
