Origanum dictamnus aka Cretan Dittany

Taxonomy

Origanum dictamnus, commonly known as dittany of Crete, Cretan dittany, or hop marjoram, is a tender perennial plant that grows 20-30 cm high. It is native to the Greek island of Crete and is known for its therapeutic and aromatic properties. The plant has a distinctive appearance, with round green leaves covered in a soft, woolly white-grey hair, giving it a velvety texture. In summer and autumn, it produces tiny rose-pink flowers surrounded by purple-pink bracts. Dittany of Crete is widely used for food flavoring, medicinal purposes, and as an ornamental plant in gardens. It is also referred to by other names such as erontas, wintersweet, and wild marjoram. This compact, dome-forming, evergreen sub-shrub carries a mild oregano flavor in its grey-green leaves. It grows wild on rocky faces and gorges, and its attractive arching stems add to its visual appeal. The plant is classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Plant Species 1997 and is a favorite of hummingbirds. It can also be used in dried flower arrangements.

How to care for Cretan Dittany

Difficulty

Even if you don't have a green thumb, you can successfully care for Cretan Dittany due to its easy-going nature.

Lighting

Cretan Dittany thrives in bright and direct sunlight. To ensure your plant receives enough light to survive, place it less than one foot from a window. The current weather in your area may affect the placement in your home. For example, if you live in a region that has longer and more intense periods of sunlight, then you may want to place the plant farther away from the window to avoid direct sunlight and reduce the risk of sunburn. Alternatively, if you live in a region with relatively milder temperatures and less intense sunlight, then you may be able to place the plant closer to the window for increased exposure.
