Panicum miliaceum aka Proso Millet
Taxonomy
Panicum miliaceum, also known as proso millet, is a grain crop that has various common names, including broomcorn millet, hog millet, common millet, Kashfi millet, red millet, and white millet. It was first domesticated approximately 10,000 years ago in Northern China. This crop is extensively grown in countries such as China, India, Nepal, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, the Middle East, Turkey, Romania, and the United States. Proso millet is related to other crops such as foxtail millet, pearl millet, maize, and sorghum, all of which employ the NADP-ME as their primary carbon shuttle pathway. However, proso millet uses the NAD-ME pathway as its primary C4 carbon shuttle. Panicum miliaceum is a tetraploid species with a base chromosome number of 18, twice the base chromosome number of other diploid species within the genus Panicum. It is believed to be an allotetraploid that resulted from a wide hybrid between two different diploid ancestors, one of which came from either Panicum capillare or a close relative of that species. While useful, proso millet can also be invasive in Europe.
Apart from its use as a grain crop, Proso Millet is also a rare houseplant that is relatively easy to grow. It needs regular watering and thrives in direct light that is not more than a foot away from a window. The plant prefers well-draining soil and does not require added fertilizers if repotted each time it doubles in size. Proso Millet belongs to the Panicum genus and is native to Europe.
Common names
Proso Millet, Common Millet, Red MilletHow to care for Proso Millet
Difficulty
With its straightforward care requirements, Proso Millet is a hassle-free plant that anyone can enjoy.
Water
Proso Millet should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
Soil
Proso Millet loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.
Lighting
Proso Millet requires abundant, bright and direct light. Placing it less than one foot from a window is the best way to make sure the plant receives enough light to survive and thrive. Depending on your region, however, the current weather can affect the placement of the plant in your home. For example, in some areas the sun may be too direct and intense, so it's best to place it farther away from the window. You may also need to adjust your placement according to the season as the sunlight can change intensity over the course of the year. If you live in a region with significant temperature fluctuations, such as a desert, you may need to place the plant a bit farther away from the window to avoid extreme heat or cold. With some care and attention, your Proso Millet will be sure to bring you many years of beauty and enjoyment.
Toxicity
Ploi's records do not contain confirmed information on the toxicity of this particular plant. In the event of accidental ingestion of plant material with questionable toxicity by you, a family member, or a pet, it is always a good idea to consult a healthcare professional.
Fertilizer
The Proso Millet should be repotted either when it doubles in size or annually, whichever comes first. Providing new potting soil with all the vital nutrients annually is enough to support the growth of the plant, and thus, there is no need for fertilizer. Remember that plants derive their energy from the sun, not fertilizer.
Region of origin
Proso Millet’s native range is Probably eastern Asia, but it has been in cultivation so long that the original range is obscure.
