Paphiopedilum hirsutissimum aka Shaggy Paphiopedilum

Taxonomy

Paphiopedilum hirsutissimum is a medium-sized, semi-terrestrial, evergreen orchid species found in Asia, ranging from Assam to southern China. It has 5 to 7 linear, narrowly elliptic green leaves measuring 16-45cm long and 1.5-3cm wide. The solitary flowers, approximately 10cm across, emerge from the center of the leaf rosette on 15-30cm long flowering stems. The unique feature of this orchid is its pouch (or slipper), which is a modified lip that serves as a trap for insects, providing an "escape route" that facilitates pollen collection and flower pollination. The lateral sepals are fused and mostly hidden behind the pouch, while the upper sepal is bright green. The petals have distinctly undulate edges, narrowing towards the flower center, with vibrant pink coloration at the wider ends. The pouch itself is pale green with tiny dark spots. Paphiopedilum hirsutissimum typically blooms in the winter, producing a single 10cm wide flower. It is commonly found growing on humus at the base of trees and on moss-covered rocks.

How to care for Shaggy Paphiopedilum

Difficulty

Shaggy Paphiopedilum presents a moderate level of care, which allows plant enthusiasts with some experience to expand their skills and knowledge.

Water

Shaggy Paphiopedilum should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Shaggy Paphiopedilum loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

Shaggy Paphiopedilum thrives in bright and direct sunlight. To ensure your plant receives enough light to survive, place it less than one foot from a window. The current weather in your area may affect the placement in your home. For example, if you live in a region that has longer and more intense periods of sunlight, then you may want to place the plant farther away from the window to avoid direct sunlight and reduce the risk of sunburn. Alternatively, if you live in a region with relatively milder temperatures and less intense sunlight, then you may be able to place the plant closer to the window for increased exposure. Ultimately, the current weather in your area should be taken into consideration when determining the best placement for your Shaggy Paphiopedilum.
