Pinguicula grandiflora aka Large Flowered Butterwort

Taxonomy

Pinguicula grandiflora, also known as the large-flowered butterwort, is a temperate insectivorous plant belonging to the Lentibulariaceae family. This species stands out with its notably larger flowers compared to others in the genus. Native to parts of Europe, including France, Ireland, Spain, and Switzerland, it has also been introduced in certain areas of England, Wales, and Czechoslovakia. The plant forms rosettes of sticky, pale green leaves and produces dark blue, trumpet-shaped flowers with pale throats and widely spreading lobes on slender stems during the summer. Pinguicula grandiflora has two known subspecies, namely Pinguicula grandiflora subsp. grandiflora and Pinguicula grandiflora subsp. rosea (Mutel) Casper. While Pinguicula vulgaris is widespread in North America, Europe, and Asia, and Pinguicula macroceras is found in Japan, eastern Russia, and western North America, Pinguicula grandiflora thrives in Europe and prefers acidic soils.

How to care for Large Flowered Butterwort

Difficulty

With its straightforward care requirements, Large Flowered Butterwort is a hassle-free plant that anyone can enjoy.

Soil

If you're planting Large Flowered Butterwort, you need to make sure you use a potting soil that can retain moisture. While the soil should still be able to drain well, it should contain plenty of organic matter like coco coir or sphagnum moss to help it stay moist and nourish the roots of your plants. This is especially important since Giant Butterwort is especially sensitive to dry soil. You can also add other amendments, such as compost, to help retain moisture and provide extra nutrients to your plants. Be sure to keep the soil evenly moist, but not soggy, throughout the growing season. With the right soil and proper care, your Large Flowered Butterwort will thrive!

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Large Flowered Butterwort prefers bright indirect light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.
