Plectranthus aka Cerveza N Lime

Plectranthus is a diverse genus of flowering plants, belonging to the sage family, Lamiaceae. With approximately 85 species, these plants are predominantly found in southern and tropical Africa, as well as Madagascar. Commonly known as spur-flowers, Plectranthus species exhibit various growth habits, ranging from herbaceous perennials to occasional annuals or soft-wooded shrubs. Some even possess succulent characteristics or a tuberous base. Many of these species are cultivated for their ornamental value, with the cultivar Mona Lavender = 'Plepalila' being recognized with the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. However, recent phylogenetic analysis has revealed that Plectranthus is paraphyletic in relation to Coleus, Solenostemon, Pycnostachys, and Anisochilus. Consequently, the genus Coleus has been resurrected, resulting in numerous name changes within Plectranthus, Pycnostachys, and Anisochilus. One notable species within the Plectranthus genus is Plectranthus ernstii. This slow-growing, semi-succulent perennial boasts compact growth and swollen stems, resembling a bonsai. Highly suitable for containers and rock gardens, it showcases bright green to yellowish green, aromatic, dentate leaves. Over time, it develops thick caudiciform stems and roots. However, it is important to note that Plectranthus ernstii can potentially become invasive in regions such as Cuba and the Pacific Islands.
