Prunus maackii aka Manchurian Cherry

Prunus maackii, also known as the Manchurian cherry or Amur chokecherry, is a deciduous tree that can reach a height of 4-10 meters. It is native to Korea, Manchuria in northeastern China, and southeastern Russia. The bark of young trees is distinctive, smooth, and glossy bronze-yellow, but it becomes fissured and dull dark grey-brown as the tree ages. The alternate leaves are ovate, measuring 4-8 cm in length and 2.8-5 cm in width. They have a dark green color on the upper side and are slightly paler with pubescent veins on the lower side. The flowers, which appear in mid spring, are white and have five petals. They are produced on erect spikes that are 5-7 cm long, with each flower measuring 8-10 mm in diameter. The tree bears small cherry-like drupes that start green and mature into red, dark purple, or black fruits measuring 5-7 mm in diameter. The fruit ripens from early summer to early autumn. The species was named after Richard Karlovich Maack, who discovered it, and was described by Ruprecht in 1857. Overall, Prunus maackii is a medium-sized tree with shiny golden-brown bark, scented white flowers, and small black fruit. Its leaves turn yellow in autumn.
