Theobroma glaucum

Theobroma glaucum is an evergreen tree in the Malvaceae family. Its native range covers Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and northern Brazil. It grows beneath taller trees in wet tropical forests. Its habitat runs from river lowlands into forested hills. Records place it up to 1,476 feet [450 metres] above sea level. People gather its fruit and seeds from wild trees.

Garden references give a height and spread of 39 feet [12 metres]. Broader accounts describe trees reaching 49 feet [15 metres]. The trunk can reach about 1 foot [0.3 metres] across. Growth is moderate, and the tree keeps its leaves year-round. The supplied sources give no detailed leaf or bark features. They identify insects as pollinators, with wind also suggested. They give no flowering season or detailed flower description.

This tree needs the warmth and moisture of lowland tropical forests. It grows best with daytime temperatures of 20–30°C. Sources report a wider tolerance of 16–40°C. PFAF lists USDA zones 10–12 and UK zone 10. The tree favours filtered light beneath other trees. It prefers rich soil near neutral pH. PFAF also lists mildly acid soils as suitable. Loam and clay can suit it, provided water drains well. Keep the soil moist rather than allowing it to dry. Annual rainfall needs are high, at 2,000–8,000 millimetres, spread across the year. Even brief dry spells can cause trouble without deep shade and humid air.

The fruit has pale orange pulp with a sweet taste. People eat the pulp raw or use it in drinks. The seeds provide cacao for making chocolate. Seed oil, known as cacao butter, also has uses in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. These food uses give the tree value where its climate needs can be met.
