Tradescantia sillamontana aka Velvet Plant

Taxonomy

Tradescantia sillamontana, also known as the White Velvet plant, is a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant of the genus Tradescantia. This species is one of the most succulent and xerophytic and is endemic to dry areas of the State of Nuevo León in northeastern Mexico, but can also be found in Spain and Italy. Tradescantia sillamontana has a very recognizable and distinctive appearance with leaves arranged in a precise geometric shape. The plant is covered in almost completely white hairs which protect it from direct sunlight and excessive evaporation. The shoots and stems can reach a height of 30–40 cm, first erect, later prostrate and rooting at the soil surface. During the summer, the flowers appear at apical growth points or in the axils of the bracts; these are typical Tradescantia flowers with a corolla consisting of three bright purplish-pink to purple petals and three small sepals. The White Velvet plant is an exceptionally easy plant to care for and rewards growers with delightful purple blossoms. They are extremely easy to propagate by stem and one plant can give rise to dozens of new ones, which makes them great for sharing. 🤝 However, their succulent leaves make them sensitive to frost, so be sure to bring them indoors if your winter temperatures dip below freezing.

How to care for Velvet Plant

Difficulty

If you're looking for a plant that offers a moderate level of challenge, Velvet Plant is a great choice to test your gardening skills.

Water

Velvet Plant should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Velvet Plant loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Velvet Plant prefers bright indirect light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Dormancy

During the cold period, it is common for Velvet Plant to go dormant, resulting in a slowdown of growth. To accommodate this, waterings should be spaced out more.

Toxicity

Velvet Plant is poisonous if ingested. We suggest keeping this plant out of reach if you have children, cats, or dogs in the home.

Humidity

The Velvet Plant does not need extra humidity. Plants primarily absorb water through their root system, making soil watering the best way to provide humidity to your plants.

Fertilizer

The Velvet Plant should be repotted when it has doubled in size or annually, whichever comes first. Providing fresh potting soil with all the essential nutrients each year ensures the plant's well-being, eliminating the need for fertilizer. Remember, plants derive their energy from the sun and not fertilizer.

Growth-pattern

New growth will sprout from the top of the Velvet Plant as it grows vertically.

Region of origin

Velvet Plant’s native range is the Americas.

Flower

Yes, if you provide your Velvet Plant with adequate sunlight and water, you can expect it to bloom.
