Vitex trifolia aka Indian Three Leaf Vitex

Taxonomy

Vitex trifolia, also known as the simpleleaf chastetree, is a deciduous shrub or small tree that typically grows 1-4 meters tall. Its stems are usually procumbent, often rooting at the nodes, and forming mats several meters in diameter. This large coastal shrub or small tree is sometimes prostrate or ascending in habit and is widely grown as an ornamental plant and hedge. However, it is also gathered from the wild for local medicinal use. Beach Vitex, a variety of Vitex trifolia, was introduced to the South Eastern United States in the mid-1980s to protect beaches from coastal erosion. However, within a few years, it spread rapidly through its runners and became a serious threat to native dune plants, nesting sites for sea turtles, and foraging and nesting areas for shorebirds from Georgia to Maryland. It is now illegal to sell, distribute or move this species from one property to another.

How to care for Indian Three Leaf Vitex

Difficulty

Indian Three Leaf Vitex requires a bit more attention and knowledge to thrive, making it a suitable plant for those with some gardening experience.

Water

Indian Three Leaf Vitex should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Indian Three Leaf Vitex loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Indian Three Leaf Vitex prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Dormancy

During the cold period, it is common for Indian Three Leaf Vitex to go dormant and their growth may slow down, so waterings should be spaced out more during this period.
