Taxonomy ID: 1318
Megaskepasma erythrochlamys, commonly known as Brazilian red-cloak, is a monotypic genus of plants native to Venezuela and other parts of South America. This evergreen shrub can grow up to 3 meters in height and width, with dense branching and oval leaves that measure up to 40cm long. The leaves are dark green with prominent veins and provide a tropical-looking effect throughout the year. From late summer into winter, and occasionally throughout the rest of the year, the shrub produces erect flower spikes that feature showy red bracts surrounding white, two-lipped flowers. The inflorescence of this ornamental shrub is particularly striking, with large erect heads of conspicuous crimson bracts. Brazilian red-cloak prefers a rich soil and can be propagated from either seed or cuttings. This frost-sensitive plant belongs to the Acanthaceae family, which also includes other eye-catching members such as Justicia carnea and Rhinacanthus beesianus.
