Aeollanthus (commonly called rocksage) is a genus of flowering plants in the mint family, Lamiaceae, within the order Lamiales. All species in this genus are native to Africa, where they are distributed across tropical and southern regions from Senegal and Ethiopia south to South Africa. The genus was authored by C.Mart. ex Spreng. and includes several historical synonyms: Icomum, Oxyotis, and Bovonia. Aeollanthus comprises herbaceous or softly woody plants typical of the Lamiaceae, though detailed morphological descriptions are scarce in readily available sources. The genus contains approximately 43 accepted species, with notable members including Aeollanthus suaveolens, Aeollanthus parvifolius, and Aeollanthus repens. GBIF records 5 descendant species, though this count appears incomplete relative to the Wikipedia species list.

Etymology

The genus name Aeollanthus derives from Aeolus, the Greek god of winds, combined with the Greek word anthos meaning flower — thus "wind flower." The common name "rocksage" refers to the sage-like aromatic quality typical of many Lamiaceae members and their rocky habitat preferences.

Distribution

Aeollanthus is entirely African in distribution. Species range across the continent from West Africa (Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Liberia) through Central Africa (Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo/Zaïre) to East Africa (Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda) and south to Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia, Eswatini, and South Africa. Individual species have varied ranges — some are narrow endemics (e.g., A. tuberosus restricted to Angola, A. haumannii to Namibia) while others like A. buchnerianus span from Zaïre and Uganda south to South Africa.

Taxonomy Notes

The genus Aeollanthus was described by C.Mart. ex Spreng. and is placed in the family Lamiaceae (order Lamiales). Three historical genera are currently treated as synonyms: Icomum (Hua), Oxyotis (Welw. ex Baker), and Bovonia (Chiov.). GBIF does not record authorship for this genus and lists only 5 descendant species, which is significantly fewer than the 43 species listed in the Wikipedia species catalogue sourced from the Kew World Checklist of Selected Plant Families.
