Baccharoides is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae (the daisy or composite family), placed within the tribe Vernonieae. It was first described by the German botanist Conrad Moench in his 1794 work Methodus. The genus encompasses herbaceous plants and shrubs native to Africa and Asia, with at least one species (Baccharoides anthelmintica) extending across South Asia and Eastern Africa, occurring in deciduous woodland, open dry forests, and riverine forest habitats.

Vernonieae, the tribe to which Baccharoides belongs, contains roughly 1,300 species distributed across tropical and warmer temperate regions of the Old and New Worlds. The tribe is thought to have originated in southern Africa or Madagascar before spreading more widely. Within this tribe, Baccharoides represents a relatively small genus; its taxonomic boundaries have shifted considerably over time, with many species formerly placed here now reassigned to related genera such as Vernonia, Centratherum, Lepidaploa, Lessingianthus, Phyllocephalum, Pluchea, and Hololepis.

Etymology

The genus name Baccharoides is derived from Baccharis, another genus in the Asteraceae, combined with the Greek suffix -oides meaning "resembling" — thus "resembling Baccharis." The genus was formally described by Conrad Moench in Methodus (1794).

Distribution

Baccharoides species are distributed across Africa and Asia, with the range of B. anthelmintica documented from South Asia and Eastern Africa. The broader tribe Vernonieae, to which the genus belongs, is thought to have originated in southern Africa or Madagascar.

Taxonomy Notes

Baccharoides was described by Moench (1794) in Methodus 578. Its circumscription has changed substantially: numerous species formerly included in Baccharoides are now placed in Vernonia, Centratherum, Hololepis, Lepidaploa, Lessingianthus, Phyllocephalum, and Pluchea. The genus belongs to the tribe Vernonieae (family Asteraceae, order Asterales). GBIF's backbone checklist recognises approximately 71 taxa under this name, while a stricter secondary checklist accepts 2 species (B. adoensis and B. dumicola).
