Cananga is a small genus of flowering trees in the custard-apple family, Annonaceae, within the order Magnoliales. The genus comprises just two recognized species, placing it among the more compact genera of the family. The genus name traces back to the Proto-Malayo-Polynesian word kanaŋa, reflecting the plants' long history of recognition and use across Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
Species in the genus are native to a range extending from Indo-China through the Malesian region to Australia, a distribution consistent with many other tropical Annonaceae genera adapted to warm, humid lowland and monsoon forest environments.
The two accepted species are Cananga brandisiana (Pierre) Saff., which carries the synonym Cananga latifolia (Hook.f. & Thomson) Finet & Gagnep., and Cananga odorata (Lam.) Hook.f. & Thomson. Of these, Cananga odorata is by far the better known and economically significant member of the genus: it is the botanical source of ylang-ylang, a fragrant essential oil distilled from its flowers that has long been prized in perfumery and aromatherapy.
Genus authorship is attributed to (Dunal) Hook.f. & Thomson, with the name formally published in Flora Indica, volume 1, page 129, in 1855. Taxonomically, Cananga sits within Annonaceae alongside other tropical genera such as Annona and Uvaria, sharing the family's characteristic aromatic tissues and simple, spirally arranged leaves typical of early-diverging angiosperm lineages in the Magnoliales.
