Canotia is a genus of thorny shrubs or small trees in the family Celastraceae (order Celastrales), comprising two species native to the arid regions of the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The plants are essentially glabrous, with numerous naked, pale green branches that usually end in stout thorns — the twigs carry out photosynthesis, as true leaves are reduced to minute, soon-deciduous deltoid scales only 1–2 mm long. Flowers are small and perfect, with five calyx lobes, five petals, and five stamens; the pistil consists of 3–5 carpels borne on a short gynophore. The fruit is an oblong capsule, fleshy when young and drying over an internal woody layer, persisting on the plant for a year or more before splitting apically into paired beaks to release 1–2 hard, laterally compressed, membranously winged seeds per locule. The better-known species, Canotia holacantha (crucifixion thorn), is a scrubby plant typically reaching 10–15 feet, though exceptional Mojave Desert individuals have been recorded at over 30 feet. Its gray-green thorny branches and reddish-brown seed capsules, which hang in groups of five, make it a conspicuous element of the Sonoran and Mojave Desert landscapes.

Etymology

The genus name Canotia derives from a 19th-century Mexican common name for the plants. The best-known species, Canotia holacantha, is commonly called crucifixion thorn — along with Spanish vernacular names chaparro amargosa, corona-de-cristo, and rosario — all of which refer to its sharp, thorn-tipped branches likened to the Crown of Thorns. The name "crucifixion thorn" is also applied to several unrelated desert species, including Castela emoryi and Koeberlinia spinosa.

Distribution

The genus is confined to the higher-elevation deserts of the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Canotia holacantha ranges across central and northern Arizona into southeastern California, southern Utah, and the lower Grand Canyon, with isolated populations in Baja California and Sonora, Mexico. It occupies both the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts. The second species, Canotia wendtii, is recorded from Chihuahua, Mexico.

Ecology

Canotia holacantha grows in desert scrub environments, primarily on slopes and in washes within the higher Sonoran and Mojave Deserts. The plant is adapted to arid conditions, conducting photosynthesis through its green, longitudinally grooved twigs — which bear minute white epidermal wax dots — rather than through ephemeral leaves. Pollen records from the Waterman Mountains of Arizona document its presence in the region since the Late Wisconsin glacial period.

Cultivation

Canotia holacantha can be grown in cultivation from seed. It is a desert-adapted plant suitable for xeriscaping in hot, arid climates, though detailed horticultural guidance is sparse in the scientific literature.

History

Pollen records from the Waterman Mountains of Arizona document the presence of Canotia holacantha during the Late Wisconsin glacial period, alongside dominant trees Juniperus osteosperma (Utah juniper) and Pinus monophylla (single-leaf pinyon), indicating the species has been part of the regional flora for thousands of years. In a more modern historical note, a World War II Ailanthus-class net laying ship, the USS Canotia (AN-44), was named after the crucifixion thorn tree.

Taxonomy

Canotia Torr. (Celastraceae, order Celastrales) contains two accepted species: Canotia holacantha Torr. and Canotia wendtii M.C.Johnst. The genus was treated in a 1998 revision by Jeffrey W. Brasher for the Journal of the Arizona–Nevada Academy of Science (vol. 30, no. 2, p. 57). GBIF records no synonyms at the genus level.
