Catopsis is a genus of epiphytic bromeliads in the family Bromeliaceae (order Poales), placed in the subfamily Tillandsioideae. Described by the botanist August Heinrich Rudolf Grisebach (Griseb.), the genus comprises roughly 20 species distributed across much of the Neotropics — from Mexico and Florida south through Central America and the Caribbean to Brazil. Plants in this genus are typically tank-forming or soft-leaved epiphytes found in humid tropical and subtropical forests, growing on tree branches where they collect water and organic debris in their leaf rosettes. The genus is perhaps best known for Catopsis berteroniana, a pale, waxy-leaved species found in humid highland forests of Venezuela and neighboring countries, which is considered a probable carnivorous plant: its slippery leaf surfaces, ultraviolet reflectance, and accumulation of insect remains suggest it traps and digests prey, though the mechanism is less active than in classical carnivores. The genus name derives from the Greek kata (hanging down) and opsis (appearance), a reference to the pendant or drooping aspect of the inflorescence or leaves in some species.

Etymology

The name Catopsis is formed from the Greek kata (hanging down) and opsis (appearance), alluding to the drooping or pendant aspect seen in some species of the genus.

Distribution

Catopsis is widely distributed across the Neotropics, ranging from Mexico and southern Florida through Central America and the West Indies south to Brazil. Species are predominantly epiphytes of humid tropical and subtropical forests.

Ecology

Most Catopsis species are tank epiphytes that lodge in the canopy and sub-canopy of humid forests, collecting rainwater and leaf litter in their leaf rosettes. Catopsis berteroniana is a noted exception: its waxy, ultraviolet-reflective leaves are thought to attract and trap insects, making it a candidate carnivorous bromeliad — one of very few in the family.

Taxonomy Notes

Catopsis Griseb. is placed in subfamily Tillandsioideae of Bromeliaceae, the same subfamily as Tillandsia and Vriesea. GBIF records the genus under order Poales, class Liliopsida (monocots). The genus comprises approximately 20 accepted species; GBIF currently recognizes 5 descendant taxa under the backbone record (key 317316250).
