Chaiturus is a monotypic genus of flowering plants in the mint family (Lamiaceae, order Lamiales). First described in 1787, it contains a single species, Chaiturus marrubiastrum, commonly known as false motherwort — a name reflecting its resemblance to the related genus Leonurus (true motherwort). The plant is an herbaceous perennial native to a broad range spanning central and southern Europe through Russia and the Caucasus into Central Asia. It bears a general similarity to Leonurus cardiaca in habit and foliage. The genus was historically classified within Leonurus, and some taxonomic authorities continue to treat it there, though it is now widely recognised as distinct.

Etymology

The common name "false motherwort" distinguishes Chaiturus marrubiastrum from true motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca), reflecting their morphological similarity within the Lamiaceae. The genus name Chaiturus was published in 1787; the species was long treated under Leonurus as Leonurus marrubiastrum and remains accepted under that name by some taxonomic authorities.

Distribution

Chaiturus marrubiastrum is native to a wide Palearctic range: central and southern Europe (Germany, Poland, Spain, Italy, the Balkans, Ukraine), extending eastward through Russia, Turkey, and the Caucasus into Central Asia (Altai, Xinjiang, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan).

Taxonomy

Chaiturus was first described as a genus in 1787 in the family Lamiaceae. The sole species, C. marrubiastrum, was historically classified in the closely related genus Leonurus (as Leonurus marrubiastrum L.), and GBIF records confirm ongoing taxonomic disagreement: the GBIF backbone accepts it under Chaiturus, but several contributing databases continue to accept Leonurus marrubiastrum as the valid binomial. The plant's common name, "false motherwort", reflects this close relationship.
