Conium is a small genus of flowering plants in the carrot family, Apiaceae (order Apiales), erected by Carl Linnaeus in 1753. As of December 2020, Plants of the World Online recognizes six species: most are restricted to southern Africa (C. chaerophylloides, C. fontanum, C. hilliburttorum, and C. sphaerocarpum), alongside the far more widespread C. maculatum (poison hemlock) and C. divaricatum. GBIF's backbone taxonomy places the genus in class Magnoliopsida within Apiaceae and records 13 descendant taxa.
Conium species are eudicots that are typically biennial, forming a basal rosette in their first year before sending up a rigid, hollow flowering stalk one to three metres tall in their second; plants that germinate very early in spring can instead complete their life cycle as annuals. They are diploid (2n = 22) and produce hermaphroditic, insect-pollinated or self-fertilizing flowers. The finely divided, parsley-like foliage and parsnip-like roots make Conium easy to mistake for edible Apiaceae relatives, though crushed leaves and stems give off a distinctive foul odor, and C. maculatum further shows characteristic purple blotching on its stems.
Every tissue of every species contains poisonous piperidine alkaloids — chiefly γ-coniceine, coniine, and N-methylconiine — which interrupt the central nervous system and paralyze respiratory muscles. This chemistry underlies the genus's long association with poisoning, historically including use in ancient Greek capital punishment. Taxonomically, the standing of the southern African species has been debated: several botanists have argued the regional populations show too little differentiation to warrant separate species status and may all be referable to C. maculatum, while others recognize two or three distinct southern African taxa.
C. maculatum, native to northern Europe, western Asia, and North Africa, has been introduced widely — to the Americas, southern Africa, China, New Zealand, and Australia — originally as a garden ornamental and later inadvertently via contaminated grain shipments, and is now invasive across much of its introduced range. The remaining species are confined to southern Africa. Ecologically, Conium's toxicity is thought to have evolved as a chemical defense against herbivory, part of a broader coevolutionary pattern within Apiaceae, yet a handful of specialist insects — notably the moth Agonopterix alstroemeriana — have evolved tolerance and feed on it regardless.
Etymology
The name Conium derives from the Greek "koneios" ("spin" or "whirl"), referring to the dizzying effect of the plant's poison after ingestion.
Distribution
Conium maculatum is native to northern Europe, western Asia, and North Africa, while C. chaerophylloides, C. fontanum, and C. sphaerocarpum are native to southern Africa. C. maculatum has since been introduced to the Americas, southern Africa, China, New Zealand, and Australia — originally as a garden plant, later via grain transport — and is now invasive in many of the regions where it has established.
Ecology
Conium is toxic to humans and most mammals and birds, but a small number of insects — notably the moth Agonopterix alstroemeriana — feed on it and host on it despite its chemical defenses. It also hosts several plant pathogens and viruses. Its toxicity is thought to have evolved through a coevolutionary arms race with herbivorous insects within Apiaceae. As a weed, it spreads aggressively into grassland and crowds out native species; US livestock losses from Conium toxicity are estimated at $340 million annually.
Cultivation
Historically grown as an ornamental plant for its foliage and flowers — C. maculatum was introduced to the US and southern Canada from Europe as a garden plant and is still occasionally kept by hobbyists — but intentional cultivation is rare today given its toxicity, and it is sometimes mistaken in cultivation for edible relatives such as parsnip, parsley, wild celery, and anise.
Cultural Uses
Conium was used by the ancient Greeks in capital punishment, most famously as the poison by which Socrates took his own life (per Plato's Apology) and the method used to execute Theramenes. It was later used in medicine as a sedative and antispasmodic until the early 20th century, when its toxicity ended medical use, though it persists in unproven homeopathic remedies. Its toxicity has also been put to practical use as a natural barrier planting to deter predatory animals, and its alkaloid coniine has been studied (though not commercially applied) as a pesticide against aphids and blowflies.
History
Conium maculatum was the first species in the genus to be described, by Linnaeus in Species Plantarum (1753); "maculatum" ("spotted") references its purple stem blotches. The southern African species were described later: C. chaerophylloides by Christian Friedrich Ecklon and Karl Ludwig Philipp Zeyher (from their South African collecting partnership beginning 1828), and C. fontanum and C. sphaerocarpum by Olive Mary Hilliard and Brian Laurence Burtt in the South African Journal of Botany (1985).
