Cunila is a small genus of flowering plants in the mint family, Lamiaceae, within the order Lamiales. The genus was first described in 1759 by the Dutch botanist David van Royen, with the description published in the 10th edition of Carl Linnaeus's Systema Naturae.

The genus is native to the Americas, with species distributed across a wide range spanning North and South America. According to GBIF's taxonomic backbone, Cunila comprises around 32 recognized taxa. Individual species occupy distinct regional ranges: some, such as Cunila origanoides, are found in the central and eastern United States, from Texas and Kansas east to New York and Georgia, while others are concentrated further south, including Mexico (from Zacatecas, Jalisco, Sinaloa, Durango, and Guerrero south to Chiapas), Central America (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Panama), and South America, particularly southern Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay.

This broad, disjunct distribution across the Americas — from temperate eastern North America to subtropical South America — reflects the genus's diversification within the mint family, a family widely known for aromatic foliage and a strong presence of essential oils. Members of Cunila are typically low-growing, aromatic herbs or subshrubs, consistent with general Lamiaceae morphology, though detailed genus-wide descriptions of habit and floral structure are not extensively documented in general reference sources.

Two species of Cunila are recorded in this database: Cunila origanoides, native to the central and eastern United States, and Cunila ramamoorthiana, native to the Mexican state of Guerrero — illustrating the genus's characteristic split between North and South American ranges.
