Epifagus is a monotypic genus of parasitic flowering plant in the broomrape family, Orobanchaceae (order Lamiales), described by Thomas Nuttall in 1818. It contains a single species, Epifagus virginiana, commonly known as beechdrops or beech-drops. The genus name combines the Greek "epi" ("on" or "upon") with "Fagus," the genus name of beech, referring directly to its dependence on beech roots.
Beechdrops is an obligate holoparasite of American beech (Fagus grandifolia). It entirely lacks chlorophyll and instead draws all its water and nutrients from its host's roots through a haustorium, so the plant itself carries no green tissue: its leaves are reduced to small, alternate, scale-like structures, vestiges of a photosynthetic ancestor. Above ground, it produces many slender brown stems up to about 30 cm (12 in) tall, bearing small tubular, zygomorphic white-and-purple flowers roughly 8 mm long from July into October; the dried flower stalks often persist through winter. The plant produces two flower types — cleistogamous (self-pollinating) flowers near the base, and chasmogamous (cross-pollinating) flowers, sometimes sterile, near the top, which depend on the winter ant (Prenolepis imparis) for pollination.
Germination is triggered by a chemical signal released from beech roots, after which the seedling first lives off seed reserves before forming a haustorium that penetrates the host's root tissue. As the plant matures into a tuber, the haustorial connection diminishes, leaving host and parasite joined mainly through the tuber and roots. It does not tolerate disruption of this connection to its host. Beechdrops is not considered a threat to beech tree health.
The genus is native to eastern North America, occurring in temperate forests across the U.S. Midwest and Canada, and documented from Maine to South Carolina along the East Coast, closely tracking the distribution of its beech host. Because its presence depends entirely on a mature beech-root association, beechdrops is sometimes used as an indicator of forest health and beech establishment.
