Heteropanax is a genus of flowering plants in the family Araliaceae (order Apiales), comprising around ten species of evergreen shrubs and trees native to tropical and subtropical Asia. Two species are endemic to China, and the genus is particularly associated with South and Southeast Asia as well as southern China.

Plants in this genus are andromonoecious, meaning each individual produces both bisexual and male flowers. The leaves are compound, made up of a few leaflets. Flowers are arranged in panicles of umbels — broad branching clusters in which bisexual flowers occupy the central heads and male flowers occur along the lateral branches. Each flower bears five petals. The fruit is a flattened drupe.

The best-known member of the genus is Heteropanax fragrans, an ornamental tree valued for its large, glossy, pinnate foliage. The genus sits within Araliaceae, the ivy and ginseng family, alongside such genera as Schefflera, Fatsia, and Aralia.

Distribution

Heteropanax is native to Asia, with the greatest species diversity in South and Southeast Asia and southern China. About ten species are recognised; at least two are endemic to China.

Taxonomy Notes

Heteropanax belongs to the family Araliaceae (order Apiales), a family that includes ginseng (Panax), ivy (Hedera), and Schefflera. GBIF recognises 6 accepted species in the genus. The name Heteropanax reflects its relationship to Panax while distinguishing it by its andromonoecious floral arrangement (Greek heteros, "different").
