Syncolostemon is a genus of flowering shrubs and herbaceous plants in the mint family (Lamiaceae), placed in the order Lamiales. Commonly known as sagebushes, the genus was first described in 1838 and comprises approximately 40 recognised species. It belongs to a lineage of aromatic plants characteristic of the African continent.
The genus is centred in South Africa, where the majority of species occur across a range of habitats from KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern Province to the Cape and Mpumalanga. Its range extends into neighbouring sub-Saharan African countries — including Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Zambia, Tanzania, Madagascar, and countries of west-central Africa — with one outlying species, Syncolostemon comosus, recorded from southern India. GBIF recognises 19 descendant taxa under the accepted genus.
Members of Syncolostemon are typically aromatic, with opposite leaves and the tubular, two-lipped (bilabiate) flowers characteristic of the Lamiaceae. The genus is notable for the diversity of its distribution across southern and eastern African landscapes, from montane habitats such as the Drakensberg and Chimanimani Mountains to coastal provinces. Several species are restricted to single countries or narrow endemics within South Africa.
Distribution
Syncolostemon is native primarily to South Africa, with species distributed across KwaZulu-Natal, the Northern Province, Mpumalanga, and the Cape. The genus also ranges through Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Zambia, Tanzania, Madagascar, and parts of west-central Africa (Nigeria, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo), with a single species (S. comosus) occurring in southern India.
Taxonomy Notes
The genus Syncolostemon was first described in 1838 and belongs to the family Lamiaceae (order Lamiales). Many species were originally placed in other genera and later transferred by D.F. Otieno and other authors; the species list reflects numerous combinations from genera such as Hemizygia and Plectranthus-allied groups. GBIF accepts Syncolostemon as a valid, distinct genus within Lamiaceae.
