Triphysaria is a small genus of five annual flowering plants in the family Orobanchaceae, the broomrape family. The genus is native to western North America, with its stronghold in California, where one species — Triphysaria floribunda, the San Francisco owl's-clover — is found nowhere else on Earth.
Members of Triphysaria are commonly called owl's-clovers, a name that reflects the distinctive shape of their flowers: spike inflorescences of pouched, folded blooms whose two lips recall the rounded face and beak of an owl. Despite the common name, the plants are not true clovers and are unrelated to Trifolium.
The genus is ecologically notable as facultative hemiparasites. Unlike obligate parasites, Triphysaria plants retain their own chlorophyll and are capable of photosynthesis, but they also extend root-like organs called haustoria into the roots of neighbouring plants — including grasses and forbs — to extract water and nutrients. This dual strategy allows them to survive in nutrient-poor soils, but they grow and reproduce more vigorously in the presence of suitable host plants.
Triphysaria is closely allied to two other western North American genera, Castilleja (Indian paintbrushes) and Orthocarpus, and all three share the hemiparasitic habit characteristic of many Orobanchaceae. The genus comprises five accepted species, including T. eriantha (johnny-tuck), T. pusilla (dwarf owl's-clover), and T. versicolor (yellowbeak owl's-clover).
Distribution
Triphysaria species are native to western North America, occurring primarily in California and adjacent states. One species, T. floribunda (San Francisco owl's-clover), is endemic to California.
Ecology
Triphysaria plants are facultative hemiparasites: they photosynthesize using their own chlorophyll but also produce haustoria that penetrate the roots of neighbouring plants — particularly grasses — to extract water and nutrients. This parasitic supplement is not obligatory but significantly enhances growth and reproduction; plants struggle to flourish without suitable hosts.
Taxonomy Notes
The genus Triphysaria belongs to Orobanchaceae and is closely related to Castilleja and Orthocarpus, genera that share the hemiparasitic strategy. GBIF records the genus as accepted with no synonyms. The five species listed include T. eriantha, T. floribunda, T. micrantha, T. pusilla, and T. versicolor.
