Forsythia viridissima aka Greenstem Forsythia

Taxonomy

Forsythia viridissima, also known as Chinese golden bell tree, green-stemmed forsythia, greenstem forsythia, or Korean forsythia, is a deciduous shrub that belongs to the Forsythia genus in the Oleaceae family. It is native to southern China and South Korea but has been introduced to Japan and the United States. The plant grows up to 10 feet tall and has elliptic-oblong to lanceolate leaves that are toothed above the middle. It blooms in early spring with yellow-green flowers that are about 1 inch long. Forsythia viridissima is one of the 11 species of woody shrubs in the Forsythia genus that bear bold yellow flowers in early spring. It is believed to be of hybrid origin and is considered one of the parents of Forsythia × intermedia. The best time to prune this plant is after it has bloomed, and it can be rejuvenated by cutting it to the ground every few years. The genus name Forsythia honors William Forsyth, a Scottish superintendent of the Royal Gardens of Kensington Palace, while the specific epithet viridissima means very green.

How to care for Greenstem Forsythia

Difficulty

Even if you don't have a green thumb, you can successfully care for Greenstem Forsythia due to its easy-going nature.

Water

Greenstem Forsythia should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Greenstem Forsythia loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Greenstem Forsythia prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Dormancy

During the wintertime, it's common for Greenstem Forsythia to go dormant and their growth may slow down, so waterings should be spaced out more.

Toxicity

The toxicity level of this plant has not been officially confirmed by Ploi. If there is a possibility of ingestion of plant material with an uncertain toxicity by you, a family member, or a pet, it is advisable to seek the assistance of a medical professional.
