Fritillaria sewerzowii

Fritillaria sewerzowii, or Sewerzow’s fritillary, is a bulbous perennial from Central Asia. It belongs to the lily family, Liliaceae. Its native range includes southeast Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. It grows on cliff ledges, among scrub and on steep soil slopes. These habitats lie at 3,280–9,840 feet [1,000–3,000 metres]. The name Korolkowia sewerzowii is a synonym for this species.

This plant forms upright clumps and loses its leaves each year. Its green leaves are fleshy and oval. Garden plants reach about 0.3–1.6 feet [0.1–0.5 metres] tall. Their spread reaches about 0.3 feet [0.1 metres]. Plants take two to five years to reach full size. Clusters of nodding flowers appear in March. The blooms combine greenish yellow and purple shades. Their early display gives the plant a place in spring borders.

The RHS recommends full sun and fertile soil that drains well. Suitable soils include chalk, loam and sand. Acid, neutral and alkaline soils can all suit it. Plants For A Future also lists woodland edges and dappled shade as settings. The RHS accepts both exposed and sheltered sites. East-, south- and west-facing positions are suitable. Its UK hardiness rating is H4, covering winter lows of roughly −10 to −5°C. Plants For A Future lists USDA zones 4–8.

This fritillary suits rock gardens, flower beds and informal gardens. The RHS also suggests courtyard gardens, patios and containers. Its upright form can add structure to a planting. The flowers can be cut for indoor use. No pruning is needed. Growers can propagate plants through offsets or division in late summer. Slugs and lily beetles may attack the plant. The RHS reports few disease problems, though this does not rule them out.

Treat this species as an ornamental, not a food plant. Plants For A Future records no edible uses. The RHS warns that people and pets must not eat the bulbs. It also advises gloves and other protection when handling plants. This warning takes precedence over the separate report of no known hazards.
