Syringa persica aka Persian Lilac

Taxonomy

Syringa × persica, also known as the Persian lilac, is a compact hybrid shrub that reaches heights of 4-8 feet and spreads about 5-10 feet. It is believed to be a cross between Syringa × laciniata and S. afghanica. Unlike common lilacs, Persian lilacs prefer warmer winter climates (hardiness zones 5-9). They have deep green leaves that remain attractive throughout the summer and produce masses of sweetly scented, white flowers. Persian lilacs are not to be confused with Melia azedarach, which is also sometimes called Persian lilac. These heat-tolerant lilacs are suitable for gardens in both eastern and western regions of the United States, as they can thrive in well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil. They are a familiar sight in gardens across the world's temperate zones, serving as a delightful harbinger of summertime.

How to care for Persian Lilac

Difficulty

With a bit of knowledge and dedication, you can successfully care for Persian Lilac, making it a rewarding choice for those seeking a moderate challenge.

Lighting

Persian Lilac thrives in bright and direct sunlight. To ensure your plant receives enough light to survive, place it less than one foot from a window. The current weather in your area may affect the placement in your home. For example, if you live in a region that has longer and more intense periods of sunlight, then you may want to place the plant farther away from the window to avoid direct sunlight and reduce the risk of sunburn. Alternatively, if you live in a region with relatively milder temperatures and less intense sunlight, then you may be able to place the plant closer to the window for increased exposure. Ultimately, the current weather in your area should be taken into consideration when determining the best placement for your Persian Lilac.

Dormancy

During the wintertime, it is common for Persian Lilac plants to go dormant and their growth rate may slow down. Therefore, the amount of waterings should be spaced out more.
