Viburnum nudum aka Smooth Witherod

Taxonomy

Viburnum nudum, also known as witherod viburnum or possumhaw, is a deciduous shrub in the Adoxaceae family. This plant is native to North America, ranging from southern Ontario to Florida and Louisiana. It is a multi-stemmed shrub that grows up to 12 feet tall with opposite, glossy dark green leaves that turn maroon to dark red-purple in the fall. In late spring, Viburnum nudum produces fragrant white flowers in flat-topped clusters, followed by clusters of ovoid berries that change color from light pink to deep pink to blue to purplish-black. Wildlife enjoys eating the fruit, and deer often browse the foliage. It is also a larval host to spring azures and hummingbird clearwing moths. Viburnum nudum is sometimes called possumhaw viburnum and is a rare houseplant that requires regular watering and long-lasting direct light. It does best in well-draining soil and doesn't need added fertilizers if repotted every time it doubles in size. The genus name comes from the Latin name of a species plant, while the specific epithet means nude or naked.

How to care for Smooth Witherod

Difficulty

If you're looking for a plant that offers a moderate level of challenge, Smooth Witherod is a great choice to test your gardening skills.

Water

Smooth Witherod should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Smooth Witherod loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Smooth Witherod prefers bright indirect light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Toxicity

There is no verified data on the toxicity of this plant in the records of Ploi. If any person, including yourself, a family member, or a pet, consume plant material with an uncertain toxicity level, it is advisable to seek the advice of a healthcare expert.

Fertilizer

The Smooth Witherod is characterized by its slow growth and doesn't need fertilization in addition to its potting soil. By renewing the soil in its pot once a year, it should have enough nutrition. Remember, plants get their energy from sunlight, not from any fertilizers.

Region of origin

Smooth Witherod’s native range is Eastern N. America - Maryland to Florida, west to Arkansas and Kentucky.
