Magnolia virginiana aka Sweetbay Magnolia
Taxonomy
Magnolia virginiana, commonly known as sweetbay magnolia or simply sweetbay, belongs to the magnolia family, Magnoliaceae. It is the first magnolia species to be scientifically described under modern botanical nomenclature and serves as the type species of the genus Magnolia, which in turn represents all flowering plants. Sweetbay magnolia can be either evergreen or deciduous depending on its USDA Zone location. This type species is a prime example for species within the Magnolia genus, and other species were added to the genus due to their genetic similarity to sweetbay. The tree is native to the coastal areas of southeastern United States, growing as a 15-20' tall tree with a spreading, open rounded crown or a shorter, suckering, open, multi-stemmed shrub in the northern part of its cultivated growing range. It has smooth bark, a narrow, rounded crown, and shallow roots. Sweetbay blooms sporadically over the tree during summer months and is often planted in parks.
Common names
Sweetbay Magnolia, Swamp Laurel, Sweet Bay, SweetbayHow to care for Sweetbay Magnolia
Difficulty
Sweetbay Magnolia requires a bit more attention and knowledge to thrive, making it a suitable plant for those with some gardening experience.
Water
Sweetbay Magnolia should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
Soil
Sweetbay Magnolia loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.
Lighting
To ensure optimal growth, the Sweetbay Magnolia prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.
Dormancy
During the cold period, it is common for Sweetbay Magnolia to go dormant and their growth may slow down, so waterings should be spaced out more during this period.
Toxicity
Ploi's records do not contain confirmed information on the toxicity of this particular plant. In the event of accidental ingestion of plant material with questionable toxicity by you, a family member, or a pet, it is always a good idea to consult a healthcare professional.
Fertilizer
The growth of Sweetbay Magnolia is not rapid and it doesn't necessitate any extra fertilization. By replacing its potting soil once a year, it should receive ample nutrition. It is important to note that plants obtain their energy from the sun's rays, not from fertilizers.
Region of origin
Sweetbay Magnolia’s native range is Eastern N. America - Massachusetts to Florida, west to Missouri and Tennessee.
