Polygonatum biflorum aka Smooth Solomon's Seal

Taxonomy

Polygonatum biflorum, also known as smooth Solomon's-seal, great Solomon's-seal, or simply Solomon's seal, is an herbaceous flowering plant that is native to eastern and central North America. It is a rhizomatous perennial with arching stems reaching up to 50cm in height. The stems are adorned with pairs of pointed, oval, mid-green leaves. In late spring and early summer, small clusters of tubular green and white flowers hang below the leaves, eventually giving way to small black berries. This plant is often mistaken for Solomon's plume due to its similar appearance, although Solomon's plume has upright flowers. Interestingly, Polygonatum biflorum is said to have scars on its rhizome that resemble the ancient Hebrew seal of King Solomon. While it is a super rare houseplant, Solomon's Seal is relatively easy to grow and requires regular watering to thrive. It thrives best in abundant sunlight and should be placed within 3 feet of a window. Well-draining soil is preferred, and the plant typically does not require additional fertilizers if repotted each time it doubles in size. Belonging to the Polygonatum genus, Solomon's Seal is native to Eastern North America.
